Photos and Snapchat captions arrived separately?

Some exports contain an original photo and a separate transparent PNG holding text, stickers or a drawing. Opening only the original photo does not show the separate layer.

Memory Harbor currently composites matched PNG overlays onto JPEG photos only. It cannot restore an overlay that Snapchat did not include, apply overlays to videos, or guarantee compatibility with every export layout. Only internal synthetic tests have been completed so far.

What to keep from the export.

Keep the original JPEG, its PNG overlay and the history JSON or HTML together. Avoid renaming or deleting files before inspecting the matches. The beta looks for explicit matching names and identifiers; similar pictures, dates or folder positions are not enough to establish a safe match.

If you have not downloaded the actual media yet, start with Snapchat’s own export instructions. The organizer does not use your account or follow download URLs for you.

Test one caption before a whole collection.

  1. Make a copy containing a few JPEGs, their original overlay PNGs, and the history file. Preserve the untouched export as your backup.
  2. Import the copy into Memory Harbor on desktop. Total input must be at most 256 MiB per batch and each file at most 96 MiB.
  3. Check the matched files and enable “Add matched PNG overlays to JPEGs.” A missing or ambiguous match is left for review.
  4. Create the organized ZIP, download it, and extract it into a new folder. The tool produces a new composite rather than changing the source files.
  5. Open the result at full size. Check that the text is legible, in the expected position and not stretched or cut off. Compare with your original memory if you still have access to it.

Keep the original and the merged copy.

The exported result retains an original copy when compositing a supported photo and includes a file-by-file report. A merged JPEG is re-encoded, so do not discard the original just because the caption looks right. Review the report for skipped or unsupported items.

Photo appearance and capture dates are separate checks. If the caption is correct but the photo lands on today in your library, read the guide to Snapchat export dates and test the embedded date in your destination app.

What if it is a video or the caption is absent?

Video compositing and split-video stitching are outside this beta. The files are preserved and flagged for review. If a required PNG is missing from your downloaded export, Memory Harbor cannot recreate the original caption or sticker from nothing.

The optional feedback form can record whether import, export or the visible result failed. Describe the step and file format; please do not submit private media, location details or signed export links.
